6 Mental health tips for self-care

I believe that we have the power to enact real change in the way we think, behave, and cope on a daily basis. But we need to put in the work.

If you're looking for mental health advice from therapists that you can start acting on immediately, try some of these tactics:

1- Write your thoughts down. It helps you get out your frustrations. Just take five minutes or so a day to write down your thoughts, feelings, or ideas.

2-When you're super-stressed and overwhelmed, see if there's any way to put a positive spin on it. Be thankful for whatever is happening to you right now because it can always be worse...or boring. Challenges are part of life & going through them makes us feel alive if we would only take some deep breaths & remember that it could be worse. Ultimately, it can be a welcome warning sign that you need to find ways to scale back before you burn out.

3- Take daily walks. Sometimes you just need to step away from what you're doing or dealing with and get some air. Taking regular, relaxing walks can be soothing for your mind. Try scheduling 20 minutes into your work calendar to remind you to just step out for a bit.

4- Counter negative thoughts with positive ones. Always have in mind 3 to 5 things that automatically make you smile. For me, it's my children, trees & a very funny event that happened to me ten years ago. That's right, it still makes me laugh for a couple of minutes.

5- Make a list of "your people. These are the people you know you can always call, text, or email when you need to feel a connection.

6-Have a self-care arsenal. Everyone has certain things or coping mechanisms that give them a boost when they’re feeling lousy. To me, it's taking a nap, going for a walk, ideally in nature, making myself a good cup of hot green tea, listening to my favorite music.

Let me know what you think of these tips. Are you ready to incorporate some life-changing advice into your real life? Do you have your list of self-care arsenal? I would be happy if you would share them with me.
